I have checked my national insurance forecast and I am up to date as have been contributing since 1985. I want to retire at 60 but my state pension won't be given to me until 66. Do I need to pay for additional years to cover these gaps

Once your pension accrued to date reaches the full amount you don't need to add any more, you don't need to fill years just because they are there.  The amount to date cannot be taken away.

    Nothing stopping you.

You still won't get the state pension until you are 67 though. No way round that.

    Have you made other provisions?

What does your forecast say, in terms of entitlement accumulated up to 2024, and what your maximum is?
