Free Delivery from local independent stores in Shropshire - Wellington & Shrewsbury

Both Wellington in Telford &, most recently Shrewsbury now have this free delivery service, by bike, within a 3 mile miles.

This means, shoppers can buy small, or full  amounts from a local greengrocer, refill store, or other local trader, and get it delivered for free.  This is brilliant for those who travel to the shops by bus, & can't or  don't want the hassle of carrying heavy shopping.
Good for local traders, the local area, and of course, the environment:)

Interesting it's being run as free for everybody and by volunteers.

Living in London a few places setup their own free bike based local delivery service during covid and some have continued them since. Obviously makes more sense here for merchants to do so when so many of their customers are local and naturally the cyclist is paid.

Would be interesting to see how the financials stack up when considering the cost of the bike, insurance etc less advertising on the bike, any views in changes in sales etc... is this a cost, neutral or positive? We can leave out the environmental considerations.

    Hi
I can't give you the stats..And that's an interesting question.

It does however mean that local traders can increase their sales.
Also Wellington has a large older population so 'Market day' buses are pretty full as the old folks, and some young head down to the shops..  The fact that they then don't have to lug shopping about. Can go to the cafe & know their shopping will be dropped off at their house.  It also has a social benefit, if they live alone they have social contact.
But, overall, people will use the service more frequently than a large supermarket shop, so will spend 'more' cash rather than doing a larger supermarket shop.

I'll ask next time I see one of the guys backing it:)   You are quite right tho, it's not a purely financial operation.
