Short Term Money Market Fund - these are cash-like low risk/volatility investments that are generally suited to those needing to preserve wealth rather than grow it.

@Hoenir not losing too much in a downturn was my concern when essentially at the start of my investing journey.  Im hearing that most people consider this  irrelevant...
Downturn is a broad generalisation.  People that consider things as irrelevant provide opportunties to those that don't.

@Hoenir I will invest, I am thinking about the hsbc balanced or dynamic global fund, or split across both.

You could also spread your investment out over a period of time. Difficult to call what will happen next. However the upside is extremely limited in the short term.

@linton In my case though I need to safeguard and also create some regular revenue. liquidity wise it wouldnt be a problem as I would be thinking of it as a long term income generator so it seemed to serve both purposes. I suppose I could just use the interest as an income generator  but the way i saw it is that the principle amount would grow whilst also paying cash to cover the lost business income. Something that cash wouldnt.

I do realise it comes with its problems but cant think of a better way to preserve value and generate income

Hi everyone, may I ask if someone like the OP has chosen an investment fund to park this amount in, do they just leave it for 17 years (or 12 years then gradually reduce the equity portion in the last 5 years), no need to look at it at all? Or do they still need to swap, change... if necessary for better deals etc? Sorry if this is a silly question.
EDIT: right, i've got the answer from elsewhere and for me I'll just buy and hold :-)
