You usually get one short payment covering a couple of weeks followed by a full payment 4 weeks later.  When he applies he will get a letter after a couple of weeks giving the first 2 payment dates and amounts so applying the usual 3 months ahead should give plenty of notice.

The date it comes is based on your national insurance number - I don't know the workings - but it's paid up to 4-5 weeks after you reach SPA, then every 4 weeks after.

One can have the state pension paid weekly and as I recently heard fortnightly too. So it's not a month in arrears I guess if you choose one of those options.

Sounds like cash might be tight, so I'd opt for weekly payment. He'll get paid every week, on a fixed weekday that depends on his NI number. First payment will a part week the first time that day comes along after his birthday.

Agree this would seem sensible although every fortnight remains possible since he currently receives ESA on that basis.

You do know that he/you has to claim his state pension for it to begin to be paid, I hope? It used to be that if you wanted anything other than 4-weekly payments you had to claim by phone, but I think that may have changed now? Somebody will know the detail.

Yes, anything except four weekly has to be claimed by telephoning. Claiming online only  allows four weekly in arrears.
