Rebalancing when they overvalued helps smooth out the dips on the rollercoaster. A constant income stream is usefull when budgeting and creating cashflow projection. Equities can on occassions remain underwater for a long time.ali_bear said:
If you are invested in equities the important thing is not to have to sell them when they are poorly valued. That's the reason for holding some cash and bonds.

Passive global index funds are not all equal. There are hundreds of different benchmarks.
