Workplace Sick pay question

Hi All I am after a bit of advice on Sick pay a Family member has been quite poorly for past 3 days now and still not feeling to good as of this evening.
I have had a read of their work place handbook which mentions for the First 3 days SSP is not payable .  Myself or the family member has not had time off work due to sickness .is there a general rule or is purely down to workplace So not sure which is the best advice to offer?
Any help appreciated.

Statutory Sick Pay is not payable for the first three days, so if all the employer pays is SSP then that only kicks in on Day 4.

If there is a Company Sick Pay scheme, then it would be usual for that to kick in from Day 1, but it's likely to be discretionary.

Also if it is SSP only,  then the amount paid will almost certainly be a lot lower than normal wages.

SSP is currently payable at £116.75 per week.  Due to increase by £2 per week in April.

Yep, SSP after the 3rd day if they meet the eligibility criteria for it.

If the Company Handbook states SSP then it sounds like the company only pay the statutory legal minimum amount.

If there was a company sick pay scheme it would give details of the entitlement,  ie how long a percentage of pay would be made.

Just remember to keep the company informed of your sickness, you cannot be sacked for being sick, but you should let them know with as much notice as possible.

Employees can be dismissed on the grounds of excessive sick leave

    True.
The way the original post read i thought that sickness was rare as they had no idea how SSP worked.

To be sacked for prolonged leave takes time, so anyone going through that process should be in doubt of it happening.
It certainly should be for a week or two sick.
