Hey folks 👋

Curious how most people here manage their gaming budgets. With prices going up and some new releases hitting £70+, I’ve been looking for smarter ways to game without breaking the bank.

What’s your usual strategy for saving on games? Pick your top option (or more if it’s a multiple choice poll), and feel free to drop any tips or go-to sites in the replies!

    None of the above.

I play last year's games, in fact quite often last decade's games.

Enormous premium for the latest stuff, and that's before upgrading your hardware to run it.

I generally buy 2 - 3 "big" games a year. For titles like Football Manager which I tend to buy every year (with the exception of this year when it was cancelled) I try to put aside the money each month in my "Games" pot so they money is ready to spend when I want to buy it.

£10 - £15 a month is usually plenty for my annual gaming needs

  • I usually try and grab things that are on sale, but ultimately if it's something that I want I'll probably just end up buying it regardless of the price. Even then the value proposition is pretty good. If I spend £60 on a game that I get 30 hours out of, that's £2/hour - significantly cheaper than going out to the cinema or to the pub for a few!
  • Wait for Steam/console sales
Waiting for sales is my main thing. If you add things to your Steam wishlist for example it emails you when there is a sale on that game.

I don't consume as much content about games coming out as I did. Gaming journalism has made this easy as a lot of the content they put out is tedious and/or depressing. Deciding what you want to play now is easier and honestly more fun that getting sucked into the anticipation thing. That saves money because you aren't looking at buying the immediately recent.

I've also made a fair bit on ebay selling old retro games.
