Council Tax 25/26 demand (England) for 7.8%

Hi, we just received our latest council tax demand (England) which for 25/26 gives a total increase of 7.8% (including an increase of 48.2% for the local parish council).

This seems a little high given that our state pensions are only going up by 4.1%.

Any thoughts?

It’s shocking, but not surprising.  As it’s the only tax you can get locked up for not paying, unfortunately we have to pay it

7.8% does seem high as the average seems to be about 5%.  There is discussion in this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6592329/council-tax-increasing-over-5#latest

It probably includes an increase in the base amount, plus some of the policing, social care add on amounts etc. I would say it might be on the high side, but also within the realms of what I would expect.

It's not an income based tax.

Unless a 7.8% increase is unlawful, there is nothing you can do about it

I would be thrilled with an increase of only 7.8%
