Council Tax Claim

We built our house 34 years ago and ten years later added an extension shortly afterwards we received a letter from our local council stating our council tax band had increased from a D to an E. We’ve have recently been told that this increase should not have happened until the property is sold. Is this correct and if so how do we go about challenging this increase? TIA

More suited to this section of the forum. Have asked for it to be moved as no consumer rights issues.

The answer seems to be... it depends https://www.gov.uk/guidance/council-tax-band-changes
Some changes can be immediate, others only occur when the property is sold.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I'm ex VOA and I've never, ever come across an instance where a CT band has been increased on account of alterations carried out by the current owner.

As this appears it may be a "point of law" matter rather than a simple band challenge it is not straight forward. I would suggest you write to the VOA (presuming you are in Eng or Wales) and give an exact timeline of events and ask that they consider reducing the band back to Band D. Because of the passage of time it is possible the VOA no longer have the paperwork on this.

A thought does occur to me that there is a possibility the original Band D was incorrect.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Further thoughts.

Unless there had been a sale of your home, there would not be a notification for the VOA to consider increasing its band. Are you sure there hasn't been any sale of any part  or share of your home? Do you still have any paperwork concerning the band increase?
