Grandparent Child Credit

Options
I posted this on the Grandparent Child Credit forum a couple of weeks ago, but has not been answered so I thought I would try here
My wife currently works full time and has brought forward her planned retirement by one year as we have found out we're going to be grandparents (woo-hoo/aaaarggg!), so that she can look after the grandchild when our daughter and her partner return to work. Her plan now is to retire in August 2026, when she will be 56yrs old.
Just checking her state pension forecast, and up to April 2024, she requires 4 further years to get the full SP. That means that when she retires, she will still be one year short (she will have earned £25k by August 2026 so will have enough to qualify for that year).
Am I correct in thinking that to obtain the 'missing' year, she will need to make one single application (at some point prior to her SP age) for Grandparent Child Credit?
Thanks

    One year short or two?

I took it that in April 2027 she will be 1yr short as, even though she will retire in Aug 2026, she will have earned enough in that tax year to qualify for NI

The tax year in which we reach State Pension age isn’t a potentially qualifying year, that’s always been the case.

She will be 56 when she retires in August 2026, so still a long way to go to SP age!
