NHS and State Pension after Retirement. Spouse Dies What Happens to Pension

Hi

My wife and I want to know as we are planning on modifying our wills and Tenants in Common.

We have both been retired from the NHS for a few years and get our NHS pension each month. My wife also gets her monthly state pension.

When we were discussing the changes we are considering. The question came up regarding our monthly pensions and what happens when the other one dies leaving the other a widow.?

I tried googling the answer but became confused!

So the questions are:

1) Wife receives her state and NHS pension. If she dies what if anything from her NHS and State pension does the husband get after her death?

2) Husband receives NHS pension only. If he dies first what if anything from his NHS pension does she get after husbands death?

Guidance appreciated.

    Which NHS pension scheme(s)?

Were you married before the pensions went into payment?

Good point. Married for almost 25 years and yes married before we started claiming the pension 6 years ago. We are part of the NHS Pension 1995 Scheme

State pension - As you both retired post 2016 unless there is an amount above the full new pension of £221.20 nothing can be inherited.

Maybe have a look at the website https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/pensioner-hub/bereavement/what-happens-your-pension-when-you-die and if you have further queries come back and see if someone here can clarify for you?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I’m still finding some of the terminology confusing. The lump sum bit I can ignore as we both got that 6 years ago when we retired?

I presume the term Adult Dependent is the surviving member? Reading the link is my interpretation correct that the survivor would get 50% of the deceased NHS pension each month?

Sorry to labour this but we wish to be as informed as we can be when we update our wills.

any amount of the NHS pension will not be affected by your will and is not mentioned in them.

sounds like you retired when I did, the lumps sum was paid out and that is it - the surviving spouse gets the full amount for 3 months or something like that  and then about 50% afterwards

My understanding is the same as yours from the literature, that the surviving spouse is the Adult Dependent and that the amount would be 50% of the deceased's pension in the 1995 scheme.

Interesting to note that this reduces to 37.5% in the 2008 scheme and 33.75% in the 2015 scheme.

Thanks everyone. It has helped with our understanding. It does appear that the surviving spouse under the 1995 scheme would get 50% of the pension.
