I was informed by HMRC in December that I owed them some tax (on savings interest). For some reason they’d miscalculated or something.

So I duly paid it on 18th Dec.

A month later, my Govt Gateway record still says I owe them the tax. I rang them up (the online chat ALWAYS says "no adviser is available") and after a long wait and lots of questions, I was told that my money was with them, but it had “gone to the wrong part of HMRC” so I had to wait 3 wks for it to be reallocated.

Guess what? 4 wks later, nothing. It still says I owe them this tax on GG. So I rang again and this time I couldn’t hear/understand the person very well and I felt like I was being fobbed off. I was told to try again in a month's time as the “systems are running slow” or something.

Well here we are. A month has passed and you can guess what I’m going to say next….

They have my tax payment, what more can I do?

Has anyone else had this experience?

Yes, but mine went straight through and showed on my personal tax account within 24 hours. Also received a similar time in December 2024, as remember thinking ahh just before Xmas great (not). Not much help I know but shows that there shouldn't really be a significant delay in showing on your account. You have been told they have received the funds which is good, do you know the date/time of that call? also presume you have proof from bank statement or credit card that the money has been paid to HMRC? If you haven't already I would get a hard copy of that statement. Good luck

Yes I have proof of the payment from my current account.

When you say personal tax account, is this something separate from the Govt Gateway website?

It's called your personal tax account but is accessed via the Government Gateway portal, is this what you're accessing:

As above, its the government gateway used to access your personal tax account plus other government sites, state pension etc.
