Conflicting Info on HMRC Page - Do I owe or not?

Hey guys,

So I pay my tax each year by self assessment and have done for a few years. My return is compiled by an accountant to which I supply the raw data. I keep up with the payments, payments on account etc.  When I signed in today I see two conflicting bits of information:

At a Glance.. View Account...
You have nothing to pay...
"You have a total of £XXXX becoming due for payment. Your next payment is due on 31 Jul 2025"

This makes sense, this is my payment on account I have a reminder to pay, before this date.

Then if I exit out of this screen into the main screen, showing the three tiles per row the last title on the first row states:
You owe £XXX, You should have paid by 31-Jan-2024 but you can still pay now.

If I click it for more info it states 'why you owe tax' and it claims I have paid tax on an estimated amount of interest of £0 when I should have paid it on £X...

The thing is my tax return for this year declared the interest I had received, and it was actually a fair bit higher than HMRCs record - so I've already paid tax on more interest than they are suggesting.

I'm waiting on my accountant to get back to me to see if he can shed any light on this - I'm a bit concerned and confused really. Any thoughts much appreciated! Cheers

My first thought is it would be lovely if they had a computer system that was fit for purpose. Sorry this thought is of no help to you at the moment though.

Yes, that would be ideal wouldn't it - Alas, I suspect that may be many years in the making, something I wonder if any adults will ever see :open_mouth:

Meantime, I might pay the balancing payment early/nowish and see if it makes any difference - it's only a small bit of interest I'd forgo in doing that.

    a) they did not have any info on which to base an estimate so put 0
    b) the tax return gave them info so they calculated what tax should be

    c) you paid the correct tax on SA

    a) is not updated by b) in year and c) does not update b) (or irrelevantly by that time: a) )

I figured it was likely to be something like this, but I was concerned by the timing - I mean why not email or contact me if it's £xxx overdue more than a year ago. I'm sure I didn't see this message last time I logged into pay something around September/October. Odd.
