Debt letter from LCS

Options
My husband has received a letter at our address today addressed to himself and his ex wife from LCS for an outstanding debt with South East Water stating they moved out of a property in July 2020. The amount cited is £264 and it is highly unlikely his ex wife will contribute anything to pay it off. He has limited knowledge of how accurate the debt might be as his ex dealt with all bills etc, although clearly added his name to everything too! Before he contacts them can anyone advise what we do please? Is he responsible for the entire amount? Should he give them her new name and address? What should he ask for in the way of information/evidence from them? Or should he try to sit it out till its the 6 year mark?

Thanks

Sending the prove-it letter should be his first response to this.

See what they can prove or not as the case may be.

did he/they move out of the property as stated in July 2020?  If not then that's the first thing to get sorted.

otherwise I'd be asking for proof of the debt before admitting I owed anything at all.  I'd also be asking why they think he owes it instead of his wife, assuming only her name was on the account.  Basically make some noise and make them work for the money.

All that said - water companies are, in my opinion, the most cooperative when dealing with bills.  If he decides that he will pay this they likely will be very happy to set up an easy payment plan to get rid of this over the next year or so.

Thanks. We will do that. Is it worth checking with South East Water directly too, as the dates don't tally. He moved out of the property cited in Jan 2018, but the letter says July 2020?

Bear in mind that LCS are notoriously incompetent. There is a huge thread about them on this board.

As the others suggest, send a prove-it and then pick holes in what comes back
