Topping Up NI

I have checked my NI contributions on the Government Gateway. I have numerous years that say "Year is not full".
When I click on View Details I get the following message consistently "We are checking this year to see if it counts towards your pension. We’ll update your record when this is finished, you do not need to do anything."
I am a little nervous not to do anything as there are numerous years...any ideas why this is showing and recommendations as to what action to take? Phone??
I am self employed.

The usual explanation is that you were registered as self employed during those years but (I think) have not made voluntary Class 2 contributions at the time. I'm don't know if you are able to now go back and make those contributions if you chose not to at the time....some-one more knowledgeable than me will hopefully come along and say...1

From reading other threads on the same topic, I think you need to phone HMRC and get them to unlock those years. They should also be able to let you buy them (if you need to buy those years) at the Class 2 rate (less than £200/year) rather than the Class 3 one (more than £800 a year).

They're not checking and admitted to me this was misleading phrasing. You need to call them and ask what is owed for those years. There's a limit on how far back you can make up years though
