Buying years of NI contributions.

I am confused, I opted out of SERPS from 1987 til it closed which I think was 2012. With MSE telling people you could buy more credit for missing years I thought I'd check. It seems I only have 7 months of missing contributions since I started work in 1979 and also states I will get a full pension. (Gov gateway website) Am I missing something or could this be correct? surely if I opted out my contributions would have gone in another pension pot which I do have and seems to be doing quite well.

You contracted out of the second state pension, you were still contributing to the basic state pension and getting "full years" for that. In 2016 you were given the higher of the new or old pension calculations which due to contracting out would have been the old. Since 2016 you have been adding to that amount and are able to reach the full new pension.
