Basic State Pension

My female friend who was born 22/8/1951 receives basic state pension and recently contacted the pension service to ask why does she not get the full state pension , even though she was willing to top up . But they stated she had already paid for 30 years and had paid the full amount and not entitled to to the full amount of state pension , is this correct . Thanks in advance

I assume you are referring to the post 2016 "new" pension of £221.20 as the "full state pension"
As she retired in 2012 she is under the 2010 pension rules based on 30 years contributions where she receives a maximum of £169.50 basic pension that could be boosted by the earnings related second state pension / additional pension of up to another £218.40.

Many thanks for your reply ,and yes she gets the basic state pension of £169.50 which is boosted by the earnings related second of approx £2.30 . She has told by the Pension Service that she has paid all her contributions and cannot receive the full state pension .

She cannot receive the post 2016 pension amount because she reached retirement prior to its introduction.  You receive whatever pension amount you have earned under the system that was current at the date of retirement.  There are currently 3 different pension schemes in payment, pre 2010, 2010 and 2016, all with different qualifying criteria and payment terms.

Perhaps pointing out to her that she was able to start receiving that old style basic pension a number of years earlier than those who fall under the new scheme (and that not everyone under the new scheme gets the full amount either) may make her feel less hard done by....

But she IS receiving her full State pension, based on her age and pension contributions.
