National Insurance number- maiden name. Won’t link with gov gateway no

Hi. Can anybody help me please? Im going round in circles!

I’m keen to check my national insurance contributions before the upcoming deadline. Went online to check and it turns out my NI number is in my maiden name (got married 8 years ago!) but my government gateway number is under my married name. I’ve tried using their ID check app to correlate it with my passport (new name, changed at the time) and DVLA Driving licence (new name, changed at the time) but understandably it can’t confirm my ID! I’ve tried calling National Insurance on the 0300 200 3500 and was prepared to wait their 50 min hold time but after I answer their automated questions about my NI no and postcodes it hangs up! I don’t know what else to do!!! They reckon you can find the answers on the gov website but I can’t because it points you in the direction of their ID checker app which won’t work for me! Arrrrgh! Worried I’ll miss the 5th April deadline for voluntary contributions.

Does anybody have any idea how I can officially change my NI name from my maiden name to my new name so that my gov gateway no will work and I can check my NI contributions! Phew! Surely in this day and age of technology it can make the link between my two accounts- especially as they’ve already been officially checked and changed. I must admit I thought my employer changed my name details. On my payslip is my new name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks very much. 🙏🏻

    Google tells me .gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-of-details

Suspect op has tried this. The problem is that you have to sign in with gov gateway ID to change name - but the ID is linked to the wrong name so can’t sign in! Frustrating

Exactly this! We’re going to be stuck in this never ending circle of official non-existence! 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️  I was even willing to wait on the phone but they cut me off! I saw a message on the gov help page from a few years ago where they replied to her noting that she wasn’t able to use the call centre (don’t know her reason) and instead suggested she submit a form to them. I forget the name of it now but it seems to be a form requesting your NI number- they send it to you in the post for 10 days in the post. Thing is, I know my number, so seems a waste but wonder if you have to provide some form of ID, which is what they’re actually looking for from us, and this is there work around. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t understand how my NI number can be used on my payslip though if the payslip is in my new name? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ll come back to you if I find anything. Can I ask the same of you please?! It shouldn’t be this hard! I’m beginning to regret ever changing my name!!!

It shouldn't be that hard, after all a great many people do change their surnames every year - there must be a way. I have never changed my name and  hence haven't had the problem (though years ago people - like the AA! - wanted evidence that I was married, which they wouldn't have asked for if I had changed my name)

Maybe write to them? There's an address at the bottom of https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/national-insurance-enquiries-for-employees-and-individuals  It might be worth copying your MP on your letter.

Hiya have you had any luck with it?
  • I am also experiencing these difficulties, has anyone managed to find a solution yet? I have contacted my local MP for help and will post here if anything new is suggested
