in Cutting tax
Had two jobs and was on the BR code, left the first job in november 2024, still on a BR code. HMRC updated it to 1257L but its still not reflected by my employer. Employer is making me do a new starter checklist (didnt get a p45 from my first job) problem is that as I have had another job but it ended I'll have to be on the week 1 month 1 basis code but the tax year is nearly over. (correct me if im wrong)
What should I do? Am I going get my tax overpayments back through that code? Will I go back to the standard 1257L in the new tax year?
Should I just leave it and update it for the new tax year?
I am not good with these things but I know I am being taxed way too much right now for someone only working 20 hours a week
ANY HELP WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED

It reads as though you have had three jobs.
Ultimately you won't lose any overpaid tax, assuming you don't have a reason to file a tax return then HMRC will automatically refund any overpaid tax from 2024-25 in the Summer.0 -
I had two jobs in the period of July to November 2024 and was on the BR code. From November 2024 I have one job. I am still on the BR code to this date.
Although HMRC changed my tax code to 1257L in Jan, my current employer did not reflect this change. I made this aware to them and they are asking me to complete a new starter checklist with them despite already being employed with them since July 2024.
Reading the new starter checklist, I was confused about the week 1 month 1 basis code as this is an option you select if you used to have two jobs within the tax year but now only have one.
I just was confused about what this option meant for me and my overpayments.
Thank you for your response0 -

That will get you onto the emergency tax code (1257L) but it will be operated on a non cumulative basis so HMRC would sort any refund out later this year.
You could call HMRC and ask them to issue a new code with details of the earnings from the previous job included so this employer can make any refund due in your next wages payment. But as they claim to not have received the first code that may be wasted effort.

It is concerning that you haven't received a p45 for a job you left in November....
Ultimately so long as your tax code is correct with all employers and the employer has paid the tax correctly you will receive a refund once HMRC have checked all your income after the end of the year.
If you are asked to sign a new starter form now then yes, you don't have a p45 but have had another job since 6th April.0
