    You may have a point.
I used to do it when we had oil but don't miss having to not do it tbh.

    Our opinions are different.
I prefer gas due to the points I have outlined since we moved to using it.
    You indicate you prefer oil.

Hopefully both points of view have helped the OP make an informed decision.

Our oil system needed the immersion to be put on in summer months for hot water. If newer systems don't need this then that is good.
Gas heats up our radiators far quicker than oil did.
Don't miss the ringing around for prices when need a fill too, and there was always the risk of running out if not careful.
Our oil system has an immersion tank, but it doesn't need to be on any differently in the summer than the winter. Oil boiler still fires to heat the water, immersion is rarely on. And its a 30 year old system. Our radiators also heat up as quickly as anyones on gas so no difference there even with a lowered flow temp.

Sounds like your oil system may have been set up very badly giving a bad comparison.

As for pricing, you soon learn who the suppliers to keep an eye are, and they all do online quoting so no need to ring anyone. Can get the lowest price in under 10 minutes which will be lower than the equivalent for gas. As for running out, thats just dumbass trying to run it to empty.

The only real advantage gas has is convenience, and I can see why that appeals to many people. I'd choose gas over oil from scratch for that reason. But jumping from oil to another source, may as well do the 1 leap to heat pump rather than to gas and then be forced to heat pump in the future.

Crude Oil now under $60 a barrel. Heating oil around 46p a litre now, so its oil for the cheaper energy
