Lent Sacrifices

Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, which made me wonder whether anyone is giving anything up for Lent? 40 days isn't that long to give something up knowing you can return to it, but it is long enough to kick off a habit.
Thoughts?

The 40 days are not continuous - Sundays don't get counted.
As well as giving things up, it can also be a time to do extra things which can make it more positive.
Rosa, are you planning to take up a new good habit or kick out a not so good one?5 -
For the past couple of years, I have given up eating chocolate. The first year was hard, but the second year was much easier, so much so that I barely noticed it. So this year, I'm going to make it more challenging and give up cakes, puddings and biscuits as well as the chocolate. The only pudding that will be permitted is Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

I'm in a continual state of "giving up" meat and really trying to give up dairy for animal welfare and environmental concerns, so not going to add any more to that. Could really do with giving up calories that are preventing me losing weight though...Statement of Affairs (SOA) link: https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/financecalculators/soa.phpFor free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. When I was at school many moons ago ( think old fashioned convent) we were encouraged to do something positive for lent rather than merely giving up a luxury. It was considered better for the soul. 🤣.4

@General_Grant - yes I was thinking of being a little more disciplined for the duration of Lent at least.
@carly - I am interested to know what kind of positive deeds you were encouraged to undertake? No man is worth crawling on this earth.

I try to use up the stock of dried pulses during Lent with plenty of frugal soups and stews. I shall be re-reading The Bean Book, and Not just a Load of Old Lentils by Rose Elliot.3

When I was at work myself and 2 of my closest colleagues would support each other during Lent to achieve our "giving up" aims.
sadly one of these colleagues died during covid so myself and my other colleague who is actually a dear friend are joining forces across the miles to connect together during Lent.
I am giving up cakes and biscuits. I am allowing myself chocolate otherwise I probably wouldn't make it past Ash Wednesday 🤦♀️. I won't include twix or Kit Kat as these are biscuit based and rules are rules 😉4 -
Must admit I hadn't really thought about it and no one has mentioned it at work despite it being an overtly Christian place.
Would having dinner no later than 7 pm be a thing for Lent? We both tend to leave cooking dinner to much later than is good for us so this would definitely be a positive thing.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards.
