Hoping we might get some guidence with an issue. My husband is retired, gets state pension and has a private pension too.
Online, his account states that he paid the correct amount of tax for 23/24 and doesn't owe anything. However he has had a letter stating that he owes just over £400 and this will be collected during the tax year 25/26. Can anyone shed any light on why the online and letter don't agree? We tried to call at the end of last week but after over an hour of waiting on the phone gave up!

What about tax for the year 24/25?

What exactly does the letter say?

The best time to phone is as soon as lines open. Start dialling just before time to be at the front of the queue.

The letter states "Tax calculation for the year 6th April 2023 to 5th April 2024. You have paid too little tax. You owe HMRC £402.58. They then say that this will be collected by increasing the tax deducted from wages, salary or pension in equal instalments from April 2025.

There is no mention about tax for 24/25?
We are just puzzled why it says online that my husband paid the correct amount for 23/24 but this letter/tax code notification says different.

It could be there has been a further calculation done and that latest one shows the same result, which might then give you a slightly odd message on his Personal Tax Account?

Can he check his 2025-26 code yet on his Personal Tax Account?

Does it say online that he has paid the correct amount or just that nothing is owing?

My 22/23 box online last year was saying nothing was owed and it looked like it was all settled but actually nothing was owed because they were collecting it in 24/25 - as per the tax code letter for 24/25. So the cheery ‘you owe nothing message’ was more a message saying they have the matter in hand so nothing needed to be done by me.
