Hi all,
Posting on here for advice as frustrated trying to get to speak to tax office. The last 2 years my tax code has decreased, i guess to repay unpaid tax. I've been in same job over this period, no income from pensions, benefits or other jobs, less than £1k interest on savings so can't understand how i owe them money. Surely my employer pays my paye on everything over my allowance so there shouldnt be an issue. Tried to get through to HMRC on phone(about 30 attempts) but always get cut off after 15-30 mins on hold.

The notification and your on line tax account will list the reason for the decrease in code.  So what is the breakdown of your code ?

Do you receive any Benefits In Kind (Health Insurance, Company Car etc) from your employment ?
Have you received a tax coding notice ? That should explain how your tax code is made up.
If you haven't had one in the post you should be able to check on your personal tax account and (I think) let HMRC know if you believe any of the info they have is incorrect.

No benefits in kind, just income from single employer and some interest from savings which is under the 1k allowance. The reason for the deduction is underpayment from previous year but doesnt explain what caused the underpayment.

This is all it says about the deduction, no reason for the underpayment. I've never had a fixed salary for the last 25 years but never had this happen with my tax code till last 2.

Can you check your 2023/24 tax summary - most likely arises in that year?
