NI when still in school????

Options

Hi, hopefully there’s a quick answer, I’ve searched but not seen anything. I’ve looked at my NI record and it’s given me “Full year” for when I was still at school (3 years - 94-95, 95-96 & 96-97) and not in work, is that correct?

I was born in June 78 so started 6th form in Sept 94 and started university in Sept 96. I didn’t have any tax paying employment until at least 98.

Just want to be sure if these years being shown as “Full” is correct before I query with HMRC.

Any generic input very much appreciated. Thanks

  • That sounds right to me.

I have 'full year' when at school and college.  Then 'year is not full' when at Uni.  Then 'full year' from starting full time employment until present.

Prior to 2010 you got a freebie for each tax year of your 16th, 17th & 18th birthday.

These Class 3 Starting Credits used to be awarded so that young people who stayed in education until the year they turned 18 weren’t disadvantaged, compared to those who left school at 16 and joined the workforce. Everyone got them whether or not they were actually still in education, so there was no extra bureaucracy involved. I think the justification was that a well educated workforce made the UK a better place.
