Hampshire Council

Options
Hi All,

I turned up in a company van to drop off some waste at a recycling centre.

I thought you could simply turn up and pay a fee to them but turns out you need some other documents which I wasn't aware of.

I got turned away but I'm quite worried the council is going to fine the company and in turn the company tries to discipline me.

I was doing the company a favour and didn't realise that you couldn't just turn up. It isn't a part of my job duties.

I didn't dump any waste but I'm hearing just turning up is enough to get a fine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂

By law the company needs a Waste Carriers Licence if transporting waste.
A waste transfer note should be completed every time that waste is moved (and would be expected when you arrived at the recycling centre).

You might have inadvertently created a problem for your employer. How is waste usually disposed of?
For future reference, if you want to do any more 'favours' for your employer, it's always worth consulting them first.

The Environment Agency might make some enquiries. It's possible that they could issue a fine, in my limited experience they're looking to educate and ensure compliance, rather than penalise.

First thing to do is tell your employer (if you haven't already).

It does depend on a number of factors. I took some waste to my councils tip in my van, 4 lots over the past few months.
But it's my own personal van, I don't think the OP needs to worry.

The manager told me to but only did via an oral agreement.

If it was business waste, you're taking a risk.

I seem to remember seeing a post here where someone was fined for disposing of business waste in their weekly bin collections...
Luckily I didn't dispose of it.

I just took it back to my place of work after being told no

Bit of a non-sequitur, since OP was using a company vehicle...but if this was a one off and all that happened was that he was refused entry, then in all probability that's the end of the matter (although ensuring his employer knows what happened is a very good idea).
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I told my manager in a text message. He doesn't seem to care much, I guess it isn't really on my after that. I suggested taking it there, he agreed orally.

I didn't know about our waste management procedures as it isn't apart of my everyday job to be transporting rubbish but he should know the procedures.

Guess if the get a fine, it is on them to be honest. I was just following my managers directive. Not sure they could even fire me because they ended up getting a fine. It shows they aren't environmentally compliant.

The OP was worried he might be disciplined by his employer, which is what I was referring to.
Even company vans can register at sites.
