Tax relief on contributions

Hi all I am Civil servant and a member of the Alpha scheme, I buy additional pension paying £250/ month, I have enquired of the pension department by e mail but despite asking twice I do not have an answer to my question. Do I need to claim tax relief on my contributions

    You shouldn't need to no.

Presumably these show on your payslip something like this.

    Salary £3,000
    Alpha Contributions £175
    Additional Pension Contributions £250
    Taxable earnings £2,575

Not if your contributions are deducted from your salary before your salary is taxed. That applies whether you are a basic or higher rate taxpayer.

If you are buying the additional pension from somewhere else you've set up for yourself (eg a SIPP), then the provider will claim basic rate tax on your behalf and add it to your 'pot'. You'd need to contact HMRC to claim higher rate relief ONLY if you are a higher rate taxpayer.

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • The contribution is purely to buy additional Alpha pension

Then you only need to read the first sentence of my previous reply!

  • Dazed and confused is spot on.   My pay slip shows something similar - ie contributions deducted and tax calculated on the result.   But double check.
