Also consider using a Kenwood Chef. I make 4 loaves in a batch and freeze 3. I didn't get on with a breadmaker, but I love using the Kenwood.

I bought it on ebay for £57 - inc delivery.

When i went this week the loaf we usually have was £1.50 what is that all about.

I do have a breadmaker but as it takes 4 hours to cook i have to be organised to have it finish at the right time for a meal.

I did manage to pick up some other bread reduced to 82p from £140 so i bought all the shop had and froze it. I am not paying £1.50 for a loaf of bread - no way.
  • we are using only plain flour and I calculated that a loaf costs me 20p. Lasts two days. I was shocked to see the price of butter rise to over 80p and don't even get me started on milk:(
  • I've been attempting to make bread by hand as my usual loaf is £1.09 and we get through one a day, so that's like £7ish a week.

Think i'm going to have to invest in a bread maker and a timer so I can have a fresh loaf done for the morning (use my cheap night time lecky).

a while ago Morrisons were doing 2 warburtons loaves for £1. I wish i had stocked up....ah well.
I used to pick up reduced bread at Tesco but haven't seen the massive reductions in that lately - just 20p off or so

I would love to have a go at making my own but i know my slices will be more like doorstops and from what i have heard, homemade bread doesnt stay fresh very long.

  • Id love to have a go at making my own as it just has to be cheaper but the thing that puts me off is the fact I know I will not be able to get nice thin slices. How does everyone get round this?

  That's quite a saving ;) :rotfl:

For those of you concerned about milk I believe Iceland still do 4 pints for £1 - always have done - it's not a special offer.

I use an electric knife to slice HM bread, but personally like the doorstop setting;) even better when still warm with lashings of butter:D

I bought one of the panasonic bm when they were on offer a few weeks ago and am so glad......as the bread is scrummy......the only hassle is weighing it out and being organised enough to have a plentiful supply.....my little family was buying at least 3 loaves a week before and these had to be specific brands as ds has a severe nut/ seed allergy.
I can't believe the price of bread now hence why I am now dedicated to making my own.
I think you have to buy a recommended bm as my mum used to have one that made bricks not bread ;)
