Capquest/AGG - on a fishing expedition...

Hi all, first time in this part of the forum, but had success seeing off a PPC last year.

Anyhow...

Opened a suspicious letter from an unknown address and was expecting it to be PPC PCN - but lo & behold it was a letter (actually two) which seemed to be from Capquest saying they had now assumed a debt from AGG.

Neither of whom are firms I had ever heard of.... The original debt is supposedly with Capital One.

Now at some point I did have a card with capital one but have had no dealings with, communication or made payments etc for around 16 years. Whether this is that or not I couldn't say. (They allege c.£1500 was owed but they will happily take c.£300 to clear it now - which screams fishing expedition to me).

My credit rating through Experian - which I have on the free app (not paid version) currently is still Excellent so I don't think anything has been sneakily filed.

I am guessing this is just a huge batch of ancient debts that have been bought and they are trying their mitt as this is clearly going to be statute barred.

So I am not fretting - merely wondering whether best to just ignore the bottom feeding clowns? Or to send a statute barred letter?

Crapquest seem to have acquired a shed load of old debts which they are trying to resurrect. Threads are started many days about them, sometime more than one a day They were part of Arrow Global Group until May 2023 and shared various directors and registered offices.

Best answer is probably silence. You need to keep an eye on all three credit records as AGG have occasionally been registering missed payments for these antiques.

Yes, there are a ton of these at the moment. Opos, Capquest and Arrow Global are the names to spot.

Every case I've seen so far has either been chasing the wrong person or the debt is so old it went statute barred a long time ago.

That hasn't stopped odd marks from appearing on credit files. If yours is important to you, you should do a free (statutory) check and challenge it if it says AGG

    Thanks...

I may sign up to the paid version of the Experian app for a while then...
Other than that is there a free way to check your own credit file/if anything has been registered?

I did a quick search online earlier and there was a service but iirc it charged £6 a pop - now whilst that is far from a large amount, but if there was a free way I would rather use that.

Now that I think of it my bank offers a free access to credit ref app - think that one is TransUnion, so that is 2 out of the 3 biggies covered.

I would never pay experian for anything, and it seems to me that app based reports don't give clear info.

CreditKarma is free, Clearscore is free. All statutory reports are free.

Anyway, all you are looking for is whether there is an odd entry from AGG or Capquest. If it's not there now then I doubt it ever will be
  • cheers, will have a look.

If nothing showing will get back to the business of ignoring the bottom feeders.
  • Back again....   first real chance I have had to check credit profile back home with laptop, so will do that today. However, further development and thoughts....

First any of this came to light again was mid-Jan with the joint letters from Arrow/OPOS/Global about an old Capital One credit card.

Although I haven't checked all three of the main credit files - I will do that this weekend but am pretty sure nothing will have been sneakily added.

Now, early March, another "fishing letter" from Moorcroft - this doesn't mention a company, an amount, no details at all.  Merely states they offer their services to a number of companies and organisations across the UK who have lost contact with customers.
Basically asking, am I this person and giving a reference number to give when calling them.

Now I have no intention at all of calling them but am curious as to whether this is likely the same Capital One thing, or something new. I cant seem to find cases (quick search) of Moorcroft and Capital One so am thinking this is something else.

At the same time as Capital One there was possibly another credit card, and an overdraft....  all of them will have had no contact or anything at all since 2010. I had a credit profile conducted in 2020/21 for clearance to join a professional body and it was clear barring a CCJ for an unknown parking charge - which was cleared.
So without doubt any of these old debts are statute barred, so not unduly bothered about them.  I have a nagging suspicion this Moorcroft thing is something else.

Don't worry as you say they are probably fishing, if you hear anything else you can always send the prove it letter.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Yeah, am not worrying about these old debts.... they are without doubt barred, even if someone dodgy has tried to sneak something on the file more recently.

There is, however, something more recent and concerning that the Mrcrft letter could be regarding.  But meantime it is a wait and see situation.

Keep in mind that Moorcroft and Wescott only deal with clients debts, they do not buy the debts they chase.

They simply act on behalf of their client banks, so their ability to do anything except write you letters is zero.

Even if this Moorcroft matter IS the other possibility and unconnected to the older Capital One, and other bank/card debt I am not panicking (yet) - this other issue is quite large, complicated and out with the scope of this forum so would end up having to start a fresh thread in the relevant one at that point.  Meanwhile will check things via CreditKarma et all later today and then its wait & see a bit longer, for any further contact...

Edit:  Moorcroft (going on other posts and internet searches) do work for this other bank/credit card company so it is possibly just about that....   I have, it seems popped back up on the radar for Capquest to be in touch about Capital One, so stands to reason the same would stand for the other debts from same period. This goes back to 2010 and there has been no contact, payment, or acknowledgement since then so I imagine they are all !!!!!! out of luck.
