Just a thought - but if the payment was made more than 2 years after the death, could the overpayment be the tax due that the LGPS omitted to deduct before the payment was made?

Thank you all for your comments and advice.To be clear, he didn’t nominate anyone, but as next of kin I got the death benefit payout attached to his work pension. They took two years to check I was eligible and then notified me how much it would be in writing and that is what they gave me, four months on they’ve said they’ve overpaid, no mention of tax or explanation why.0

Ask them for an explanation. Was the amount something you could have checked - eg was the payment 4 times his salary where you knew what his salary was?
Obviously you have a stronger position where there was no way you could have known if their figure was correct.0
