USS ill health experience

Options
Hi

Can anyone help with the following questions on USS scheme ;

total incapacity: this will be paid if you cannot find employment that pays a small fraction of the salary you were paid. What is a small fraction?

partial incapacity:  can you work in another role somewhere else that pays less.

Any advice gratefully received

    Smaller fraction of your previous final salary than the fraction your DB pension will pay?

    My assumption is that it is a small fraction of salary pre ill health retirement?

    It's on the factsheet:

    Total ill health retirement

    When you’re eligible

    If you can’t do any job in the long term, or only a role that would pay a small fraction of the salary you would have earned, you may be eligible for total ill health retirement.

    As a rough guide, a small fraction would be around 10% or less of the salary you would have earned.

    Thank you. So if I earned £60,000 pre incapacity I won’t be eligible for total ill health retirement if I can obtain a job that pays £6k or more.

    I'm not sure you even have to obtain it - that's not quite what the factsheet says. It just refers to the ability to 'do' a role: if you can’t do any job in the long term, or only a role that would pay a small fraction of the salary you would have earned,

    Correct - it’s quite a stringent rule set,

    I retired under full incapacity following a cancer diagnosis last year - feel free to pm me if you want any info about my experience.
