The hunt for UK produced Coca-Cola!

Options
I wrote to Coca-Cola UK about this recently and had a very negative response from them.

My issue is, why does a lot of the Coca-Cola out there seem to be imported from all over the world? It must be more economical and better for the environment to produce Coke for the UK market in the UK rather than ship tons of the stuff from abroad??

It just amazes me that a company the size of coke, have no idea of how big this problem is !

Has anyone else noticed that their can/bottle of Coke was not produced in the UK as the Company's response was that this was a very minor issue and not a problem.

This is because it is cheaper for them to do it overseas. Cheaper labour, cheaper tax etc.

I watched a progam not long ago, the country file program with John Craven. It had an article about prawns, or something similar. They are caught of the north of Scotland, shipped to the far east to be shelled then shipped back here to be sold. The company said that it was cheaper then shelling them in this country by machine. And also added that customers prefer them hand shelled and people in this country will not do it.

I've also seen articles on their about veg such as cabbages being shipped to poland to have the outer leaves removed then shipped back her, because nobody in this country will do the work.

Most farmers who have crops that need to be picked by hand have to employ imigrants because the british won't do it.

This is what the CO2 reduction campaign is really all about. Countries like India, china etc. have "stolen" a lot of our production because they can do it cheaper. So our governmets are trying to get them to reduce the CO2 emissions, which will mean they have to stop producing cans of cola cheaper than we can.

It's not about saving the planet, just about stopping developing countries producing the things we want cheaper than we can.

It probably has some corrolation with Coke's poor record of worker's rights, pollution/pesticides, overuse of water sources etc. If they made it in the UK they'd have to pay their workers a decent wage and curb their pumping of waste into water systems.

(I used to be a Coke addict, til I did some research into their working practises)

Watched a Dispatches/Mark Thomas programme recently on Coke, it was eye opening to say the least, not least the Nazi links, it used to have - when it advertised on Hitler youth pamplets etc and of course other things like awful records it has for its employees etc...
