Minor Surgery

Options
Hi,

I’m posting on behalf of my son. He has been employed in the same job for almost 4 years, he has hardly had any sick time. Last Friday he had minor surgery on the back of his neck. He has a dressing that’s changed daily but where the dressing is it doesn’t really stay on because it’s in his hair line. He also can’t move his neck fairly well either which he needs for his job. He has rung  them keeping them up to date of the situation. They keep on insisting he comes to work, he has been in twice but can’t do his job. It’s not sanitary either so his wound would get infected. I know he can self certify for 7 days but his firm haven’t ’heard of this’. They are pressuring him into coming in and he is stressed he will loose his job. Is there anyone he can speak to about this. They don’t have an HR department. Thanks

    His doctor?

Yes he can self certify for 7 days but if his employer won't accept that then generally a GP will issue a "fit" note (i.e sick note) which is harder for the employer to ignore.

I had to do this when I had a chest infection and was off for 4 weeks.  I had to go through the Anima system which is the online portal my GP uses.  You can ask them to back date the form i.e. from the time he had the operation and/or the last time he was fit to work (whichever was later).  In my case they did not require a phone call or anything, but your sons GP might want a video call or face to face to assess the wound and basically make sure that you're not making it up (which sadly some people do).  it will differ between GP surgeries though
