Self assessment fine HICBC

Options
Hi,
For the first time ever, since 2022-23(PAYE all my life), I have had to submit self assessments due to the HICBC.
I have just received a letter from HMRC regarding  2022-23(which I thought I'd submitted) being late and I will be fined.
Regarding the 2022-23 self assessment, I think when filled in the online form I've not completed the final submission.
This is all very new to me and I can't quite get me head around it. I have since filled in the 2023-24 assessment.
Is ignorance a grounds for appealing a fine?
Thanks for any and all advice

No, ignorance won't cut it - what does your online SA account say for that year?

Have you now submitted 2022/23? Until HMRC receive it fines will continue to rack up. And do it by Friday!

Hi, Yeah I submitted right after receiving the letter. All my details were there and completed. This is why I'm convinced I haven't submitted it correctly.

Happens a lot - many forget to actually press the submission button.

Always check that you have received a submission receipt.

To my amazement I was successful with an appeal against my late submission fine and subsequent daily charge. HMRC cancelled the daily charge fine if £430 and returned my £100 late submission fine.
My appeal must have landed on the desk of someone with a heart

That's good news, I gather HMRC were under a bit of political pressure regarding the sheer number of fines they were issuing, so they've obviously treated you with some leniency as it's your first return
