Statutory Guarantee Pay

My employer is starting to struggle to give me my contracted hours next week as we are very quiet. My contract states that I can be laid off and might be able to receive Statutory guarantee pay. Please can someone explain to me how this works? Does my employer have to give me notice? How long can I be laid off for? I think at the most I'll only lose 1 shift a week but it's money that I rely on. Can I ask them if I can make the hours up on another day when we are busier?
Thanku in advance for your help

You can obviously ask you employer about alternatives and indeed suggest anything that might be in both your and their interests. The worst they can do is say no.0
