Seeking Advice on E.ON Next and Opos Debt Collectors Issue

Hi all,

I’m hoping for some advice on an issue I’m currently facing with E.ON Next and Opos debt collectors. Here’s the background:

In July 2024, I received a letter from E.ON Next addressed to me at my registered business address. The letter thanked me for "signing up" with them and included a breakdown of estimated costs associated with the property at my registered company address. However, my business address is a mailbox address only—I have no physical dealings with the property. My company consists solely of myself as the director.

I immediately emailed E.ON Next, explaining that I had never signed up with them, never used their services, and that this address was only a mailbox. They responded, stating the contract was issued legitimately based on Companies House records showing my company was registered there as of June 2022.

I provided E.ON with the name of the person I dealt with when arranging the mailbox address and details from the local parish council regarding the owner of the property. I reiterated that this was a mailbox-only arrangement, and I have no physical connection to the address. E.ON thanked me, stated they would update their records, and assured me they would contact me if needed.

Fast forward to January 2025, and I have now received a letter from Opos debt collectors claiming to act on behalf of E.ON, demanding £7,500. The letter does not specify the address or the period in question, leaving those sections blank.

When I received the original letter in July 2024, I immediately registered my business at a new address to avoid further complications, as the situation felt suspicious to me. I have clear proof of paying my energy bills since 2005, along with council records and lease agreements.

My Questions:

  1. Should I send a "Proof It" letter to Opos?
  2. Should I lodge a formal complaint with E.ON?
  3. I have already submitted a subject access request (SAR) to E.ON—should I wait for their response before acting further?

I would greatly appreciate any guidance, advice, or wisdom on how best to approach this. Thank you in advance!

    Moved as advised.

OP, the formal complaint route to E.ON would be my advice.

Opos are just acting as a collector in this matter, no point raising a dispute with them, as they can`t do anything about it, they don`t own the debt, so have no interest in your dispute, nor can they enforce the debt against you.

All they would do is return the account to their client.

If you don`t get a satisfactory response I would take it to the energy ombudsman.

  • Thank you for your helpful advice. I will proceed with lodging the complaint with E.ON!
