My wife has just received a letter from capquest saying they have taken over her debt from another company etc etc. And now all monies should be paid to them, this letter is saying money she ows natwest, but in the 20+ yrs we've been together she hasn't banked with natwest, and they are making an offer if paid before Feb 6th it will be clear for £99 instead of the £300+ the debit is for. Letter reads like a scam, and this is 1st she's herd of this debt, so do we ignor the letter as its also in her madien name, not sure what todo, I can see there a proper company but something is fishy about this...any one had the same issue ??

I'll ask for this to be moved somewhere better.
There are lots of these. It appears that Capquest's parent company has bought a load of old debts and are trying to find gullible people to pay them0 -
I've moved this to debt free board.
I suspect there's nothing that she actually needs to pay but she may want to send a prove it letter as shown on one of the top stickies. Don't admit to having anything and do everything by snail mail.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. As fatbelly indicates, since late December there are days when multiple people have come here about long dead debts resurrected by Crapquest and it's associates.
Suggest that your wife checks her credit records in case they've restated an old default.
This debt may or may not have ever belonged to your wife or she may have the same name or date of birth as the debtor. Regardless, if they persist, send the prove it letter from the stickies on the front page and report back. Do not phone or email. Snail mail, with the minimum of certificate of posting (ideally twice) or tracked.
If it ever was hers, and it's over six years from the default debt, it will be statute barred. If you are in England and Wales the debt still exists but the only defence needed to enforcement is a letter telling them it is statute barred and they are required to desist. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Good advice from RAS.
Do check your credit file for anything odd. Some entries are showing as AGG - Arrow Global.0 -
If you do send the Prove It, then make sure not to give them any additional information to what they they already have - so use the same form of address for her that they have, don't offer up anything like her married name.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Thanks for the replys, we checked her credit files on multiple sites, and there's nothing there, so will go down the route of sending the letter, how do I move my post to somewhere else as advised, thanks...0

So update so far, nothing on the wife's credit reports, but they have some how got hold of her work email, and have sent 2 emails stating there trying to get hold of xxxxxx xxxxxx and reply to this if its you or you can help, were going to wait and see if another letter arrives at home before sending the desist letter to them, which I already have written up ready to send, looked into this a lot, and there's a lot of people experiencing same issue, from all over the place0

Yes that's true. I have been able to use the experience from this board in my work at Citizens Advice too.
They must have bought or somehow found thousands of debts. All very ancient.
You should be able to block emails or at least divert to a subfolder. If they write again, then a prove-it letter is the way forward. I don't think they have been able to prove anything so far1
