Evening all,

It's that fun time of the year again when me and the Mrs sit down to do our tax returns. We used to have a rental property (which we sold in 2019) and so had to do a tax form. Despite selling the property we are still asked to submit a tax form.

Ever since we started filling them in many moons ago, my wife has consistently had to pay tax after submitting her form whereas i have only had to do it once or twice.

My wife earns a salary and quarterly bonusses. I just earn a salary. Is it most likely the bonusses that are messing up her tax form and meaning she has to pay tax at the end of the year?

Many thanks for any insight you wonderful people can give! It's clearly a tough time of year to be hit with another bill!

If your wife's salary and bonuses are PAYE there should not be any further income tax liability.

Do you receive interest on savings accounts?

Without some actual details any attempt at explaining this would be total guesswork.

There is nothing at all unusual in owing tax at the end of the year (or being due a refund).

But the reasons for that will vary from person to person and unless you provide some useful information I'm not sure what the point of your post is?

The calculation produced at the end of the self-assessment process should indicate exactly where any residual non-PAYE liability arises?
