    If your mother is non resident for UK tax purposes she might be able to significantly reduce any CGT when she transfers the flat to you.

    Have a look at this link;

    With regard to your comments about people trying to help, you have indicated an issue that needs solving which could have tax implications you may not have considered, therefore expect to get answers that may be more complicated than you first thought.

    I appreciate the extra bits that I have not consider, what I do not appreciate is someone getting annoyed by my questions. I thought people is here to help.

    Bookworm105, you missed the link where it talks about the council house discount, which was the question that made me open this topic.
    If everyone can look up by themself, what is the purpose of this forum?

    That is a very good question.

    I do wonder why people don't Google first, find an answer and only come here if they don't understand the answer found.  I accept your original question as to the discount may require some clarification, but many on here just ask the same old question that has been answered countless time before, e.g. is there a gift tax in the UK?

    Or, they like to start their thread by "I seem to have a unique issue with tax, please help" which invariably has been raised by many in the past.

    I can only think people are either a) no good at asking Google, b) they like the social interaction on a forum, or c) in the case of my friends, too lazy (they would say busy) to do it themselves and ask me to do it.

    Well, sometimes the difference between lazy and time efficience is up to the observer. When I enter a big shop I always ask where the item is whilst my wife will spend so long trying to find it by herself.
    Also, that is how you keep a forum alive!
