Now sent pension back to employer

Hello,
I have recently been collating pensions and have a 2016/17 statement from NOW which has my pension correctly listed and 2 years of contributions.
However when contacting NOW to locate the pension, they have said my employer at the time has since closed the scheme due to employer terminating agreement with NOW, and therefore contributions disinvested and both employee and employer contributions returned to employer in 2019.
Have rang ex employer and they can't find record of it.
Is it correct employers can close schemes and request money back? I thought pensions were safe! Is this money now unrecoverable?
Many thanks

Did you contribute to the pension scheme?
If so did you get those contributions back?
Did you have precisely 2 years qualifying service in the scheme? Or was it a bit less?
Do you know the name of the scheme? Can you use a tracing service to see if the scheme still exists?
What is the "it" which your ex employer can find no record of? The scheme? The closure/termination of the scheme? Your membership of the scheme? Your employment by the employer?
Presumably your ex employer still exists - it did not go bust and then come back in some other guise using a similar name?0
