Self assessment: does profit < £1,000 mean I'm not self-employed any more?

I was filling my self-assessment tax return. I made less than £1,000. The final recap screen stated "In the year starting 6 April 2023 and ending 5 April 2024 you have told us you: (...) were not self-employed".

Why does it say that I'm not self-employed? I've been self-employed for many years. If I submit this, will the government now consider me as *not* self-employed, such that I might have to register as a self-employed person again? Will there be any consequence at all?

You say a profit of less than £1K.  Was your turnover also less than £1K?

You do not need to report self employment if your turnover  is less than 1K

Thank you, but if I miss the 31st January deadline I'll get messages from the HMRC telling me I missed the deadline and also a fine no?

Have you been asked to file a return?

Your original post suggests yes.  If so get on and file it.

Yes I have been asked to. But again it says that I'm not self-employed. So I'm confused and worried about consequences of me submitting this hence validating that I'm not self-employed.

I suspect unless you explain exactly how you ar competing the self employment part of the return no one will be able to help much.

But not filing a return is a terrible option.

At the end of your SA form there is an area where you can add additional information.  Next year my self employment income will be less than £1000 - I'll use that space to explain that.
