HMRC 6 month backlog on refunds? Anyone else?

I've just phoned and was told that they would bump me to the top of the queue and I should wait another month for a response (15 working days to be processed plus postage time). I won't hold my breath ..0

Greetings @SoozyJ22. I wouldn't take that promise any more seriously than the previous one. HMRC needed nearly 7 months to repay my IHT35 loss relief, quietly without any letter or new calculation sent. (I chased it again at the 6 month point, when it still hadn't been assigned to an inspector.) As they seem even slower to handle estate tax submissions and clearance certificates, you can expect to be holding estate cash for quite a while. Hope this helps manage expectations.

Thanks @probate_slave for sharing your experiences. We should be due a small refund of IHT (C4 increased what was owed, IHT35 obviously decreased it plus we accidently overpaid by £300 initially) but the IHT35 was a bit complicated due to changes to some funds shortly after the death so I'm worried they won't accept it and then we'll owe them and potentially interest, in spite of it being their fault since we ticked the box for them to do the calculation - we're into the RNRB taper so not just a flat 40% and we feel safer for them to do the calculation. I'll keep chasing on a monthly basis and hope I get bumped at the right time for someone to actually be free to work on it.
Then I'll look forward to waiting longer for the estate tax. I had to chase and escalate with the income tax return to date of death and then they ended up making a couple of typos and paying us hundreds of pounds when really we owed them. I don't think they'd have noticed if I hadn't phoned to tell them - we'd had to do our own calculations to get the value for the IHT400 so knew something was wrong as soon as they paid us. It's all very frustrating.2
