Last time we went we bought a tourist visa. Allows for a 3 month stay but is valid for one year so go for 3 months then fly to New Zealand (for example) for a weekend. Then re-enter Australia for another 3 months.....

I had the 651 tourist free visa the last couple of years which entitles you to 3 months maximum stay, it is not clear if that is 3 months in one year or multiple 3 month entries in one year 

I notice that there is a 600 visitor visa which costs 195 Australian where they decide if you get 3, 6 or 12 month stay in one go
