Homemade yogurt smelling funny!

Hiya,
I've been making yogurt in my easiyo maker for ages now and not had any problems (using UHT, tablespoon of yogurt and milk powder)
Last lot I made, half got left in fridge for quite a while (think about 2 weeks) and when I went to have some, it smelt fermented (bit beery/like fruit juice goes when left out of fridge) which I thought might be due to it being left too long or because I'd been saving a spoon of previous yogurts to start off next batch and needed to start again with fresh.
Next time I made some, I got a new pot of yogurt to start it off, but as soon as I took it out of the maker, I smelt it and this smelt the same (although not as strongly). Pot had been washed out properly and I'd used a different yogurt so I don't know why this should happen and whether it's alright to eat or not
Any ideas what I can do to stop this??
(just had another smell after it's been in the fridge for a while and it smells a bit more like yogurt, but still a bit beery)
Thanks
