I had a letter from capquest saying I own money to shop direct and that they have taken over the debt. With a random ref number ,I have no clue what this debt is ,I've not had any shopping catalogues in many years . Should I just ignore this or what do I do. It say if I pay a reduced amount the the debt is settled

Most likely this is a very old debt, that may or may not have belonged to you. I'd be inclined at this stage to stay quiet. Much of their system is computerised and there's a risk that if you do they will just send more and more stuff.
If it gets really bad there is a prove it letter in the stickies on the front page. That does not admit anything but asks for evidence. But we've seen some silly stuff with DCAs basically asking the writer for evidence of the debt.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1 -
I think I commented on this on another thread.
Definitely don't pay. This is going nowhere2 -
