Happy new year from HMRC ...

Received a message to say I owe approx £2.5k in unpaid tax, which HMRC would like repaid over the next 3 months of FY 24/25.   

There is an option to contact HMRC if I cannot afford this.   Is there any advantage in asking for more time to pay.
My initial feeling is to just sort this out in this FY.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You might be able to move some of it into the next tax year.

Only really advantage is it a bit like an interest free loan from HMRC.

Slight disadvantage is it means two tax years have more complicated tax codes.

Are they right that you owe the money.  Always the first stop for me.

@Dazed_and_C0nfused - thank you - I'll keep it simple and pay this year.  

@badmemory - Good point - after some tooing and froing around the personal tax account it seems that the main chunk of the estimate is accurate - might be a slight overestimate on one point, if that's the case they'll refund next FY - would be nice to get a refund for a change!  Thanks.
