Tesco - cheaper prices for online delivery

Why are Tesco offering cheaper prices for some items if you order them online for delivery? I am an OAP who cannot warrant a full shop being delivered - and I don't want to anyway - so have to pay the full price in their shops. My current ran tis that Muller Light yoghurts are £2.50 if you order online but £4.00 if you buy in store. How is that fair?

I dont think that the lower price is for only online deliveries...... it means that you have to have a tesco loyalty clubcard to acheive the reduced price.  Unless my account is different to yours and I am mistaken.

Why does it have to be fair?

Did 6 months working in a supermarket call centre, we used to charge considerably more in our supermarkets in N.Ireland, the official line was because it cost more to ship product there (pre-Brexit) but that wasnt true and it was simply there was less competition there so they charged more simply because they could.

Its likely to be the same, some online only place has a promotion that Tesco's want to be competitive against so drop their online price, no need to drop your in store price when your up against an online only firm as your customers cannot physically go to their shop if they are the sort that prefer shopping in person.

I suspect you are misreading the "Offer available for delivery from 26/12/2024 to 02/02/2025".  That is there because the website is tailored to on line ordering and not in store shopping.  But the vast majority of offers are also available in store, there are the occasional home delivery only offers, and the Muller yogurt certainly is available to Clubcard holders in store. In store offers / prices are shown in the app when Shop in-store is selected.  On the website weekly offers are shown from Tuesday morning as that is the price for the earliest time you could receive an order - Wednesday morning when prices change, the in store selection on the app only shows those prices on Wednesday.

I would have thought it little different to the price differences between a Tesco Metro and one of their corner shops.

The huge metro place will have all the 2 for 1 offers, lower prices on large items that are only sold there while the corner shop will only have smaller items and next to no offers.  So the corner shop half a mile east of us sells a litre of milk for £1.20 but the big shop a half mile west sells 2 litres for £1.49.  It's because they have the space and limited hours and the corner shop is for picking up just a few items for convenience at 9pm on a Sunday when the big place is closed.

Likewise the corner shop has a single chicken breast for £3 but the Metro has a pack of 5 for £5.  Either way the person (OAP or single or short of cash) is unfairly made to buy what are relatively very expensive goods.

    They aren’t, it’s £2.50 online & instore with a club card.

Store prices do vary from region to region and from metro to superstores though.

  • Thank you all for your replies but the price was definitely higher in Tesco's large store - with or without their club card.

What day did you check the price on line and what day did you visit the store ?  The prices on line on Tuesday reflect the prices in store on Wednesday.  If it was any other day there was likely an error somewhere as Muller yogurts are definitely £2.50 in the majority of stores.
