There was also a corner of Bruce Bairnsfather cartoons: I inherited a book about him from my parents (bearing an inscription 'Xmas 1916') so I was very slightly familiar with his work.

The ability to find laughter in the worst of circumstances astounds me, but it was invaluable.

ETA: incidentally, the article you linked to was dated just a few days from the inscription in the book on Bairnsfather. Not bad, from a distance of over 100 years.

I’m still trying to make my blue cotton skirt after messing up the first attempt- I have been able to re-use the cream lining I kept when I sent an old skirt to textile-recycling, with its pretty rose-linen as facings for the fly-fastening. Invisible in wear, but the kind of detail that I love!

That's very pretty @Laura_Elsewhere, and I love that you have a wooden cotton reel with proper yards on it. I have a bag full of empty wooden reels that my Mum had saved. Too special to throw out.

Good evening everyone, I have been away on holiday. I'm catching up with the posts. I'm up to page 19. I will read the rest tomorrow. 

@Laura_lau your Hansel and Gretel are superb. I'm a big Toft fan and have crocheted a variety of pieces over the past couple of years. 

Welcome @kiwisavings. my husband and I were lucky enough to spend nearly four weeks in NZ in 2016z We had three weeks in the South Island and then nearly a week travelling up through the North Island. We travelled across on the ferry and stayed two nights in Wellington. We had Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Auckland. My DH says it was his best Christmas ever because he could ride a train on Christmas Day. 

When my DH mother died we inherited some old bed linen and a couple of wool blankets that were made in England. We've had one of the blankets on our bed, on top of our duvet, this winter. 

Another pair of trousers bought (20% off). The first pair are so comfortable that when they sent me another coupon I decided to get another pair in black. I'm sorting my trouser shortage out. 😀

Are they Witney blankets, @Gem-gem? I inherited some and they are very useful. They are even perfect when it's too hot for other bedding, as they somehow keep you at a comfortable temperature.

Hi all, I am asking for advice please 😁. Tackling the ironing mountain I have found a couple of t shirts where the neck is starting to fray. Normally any little meds are done straight away but I have no idea how to fix these. They are obviously quite old t shirts but they are good thick cotton and otherwise fine to wear, much better quality than some of my newer t shirts so worth the effort if I can do it. They are crew neck t shirts so need to be a bit stretchy to get over my head 😂. Any ideas gratefully received.
