My mum had a good friend who was in the Navy and posted on a minesweeper during the war. I believe the nets or whatever they used to ‘sweep’ for mines would sometimes pick up fish - anyway, he once sent her a sack of assorted fish as a gift! There was so much she couldn’t possibly use it, and in any case she was living in a posh London hotel at the time (not as glamorous as it sounds, she was in staff accommodation). She took it down to the kitchen and she said the chef’s face lit up when he saw it, as it was so hard to come by.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.9

Rationing was applied when a limited supply could be guaranteed for everyone. Points were used to share food fairly when there was not enough for everyone. The supply of fresh fish was reduced as ships were requisitioned, crews were conscripted, and it depended on the weather and enemy action. Storage and transportation were limited and unreliable, so it was not rationed, though fishmongers would have limited how much each customer was allowed.

I liked the scene in Hope and Glory where a bomb drops in the river and the children collect dozens of stunned fish.10 -

I totally agree. The version I was watching was the recent remake - @kiwisavings avoid that one.

@florianatwobob I love Kind Hearts & Coronets! I'm enjoying the quiet of the solstice; more daylight from now on and new coupons to look forward to.

The Solstice has brought in the winter weather. I am snuggled under warm layers with another cold from DH. He heaved great sighs every time I took him a hot drink!
Christmas Greetings to you all.
This haunting song is in The Almanac for December.

That’s a lovely song, @Nelliegrace. I hope you and your DH have recovered from your colds and feel much better.
How have everyone’s preparations gone for Christmas? We’ll be staying at DH’s sister’s and will be cooking Christmas dinner at his mum’s. All food is purchased. I’m just having nightmares about cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen. (It’s a long story.)
I sent a parcel yesterday to one of my dearest friends in Australia, the one who sent me knitting yarn for my birthday this year. I’ve knitted her a shawl in her favourite colourway from the yarn that she sent:
The pattern is Glitz at The Ritz from Knitty and uses one 100g skein of 4-ply sock yarn. The yarn is Bendigo Woollen Mills Moulticoloured Sock Yarn. It’s lovely to knit with but the colour graduations are so long that it doesn’t work for socks. I never thought I’d knit shawls but I’m a little hooked. I can see a few more in my future. (I’m knitting another for a mutual friend, who is unlucky enough to have been born on 30th December. It will be her birthday present.)
I may be offline until we get home on Boxing Day. Have lovely Christmases, everyone.
