Withdrawing euros from ATM in France with Starling card

Has anyone had any problems withdrawing euros from an ATM in France?

I have done this before successfully, remembering to switch on 'transactions in euros'. Now in December 2024 this is not working. The multiple ATMs keep trying to withdraw from GBP account or rejecting completely.

I have complained to Starling and they have told ll me to contact the different French banks. Doesn't make sense, as every other Starling customer would have same problems. They say they don't have any problems with my account.  Payments by card in euros work OK. I am going round in circles with my complaints.

Anyone else had similar problems?

  • No, but it's been a whilst since being in France.

The dynamic conversion etc is all done by the ATM so if its not giving you an option to not accept dynamic conversion it's something the ATM operator has done.
  • Do you have a Euro account/card with them? I do and was able to withdraw money last month in France - but I was in the North and I have had issues in the rural South with some banks. Do you remember what banks you tried?

I withdrew euros in France in July, using a sterling starling account (with no fees, in euros). Most of the ATM's I passed had fees to withdraw, I don't know if just for me or everyone as my French is very poor. I just meandered til I found a free one. I tried to check on Google maps to see if it was attached to a specific bank, but it's just listed as a generic 'DAB'.

Edit: on street view the front says 'credit mutuel' which Google informs is a French co-operative bank.

I withdrew euros in France last week, using a Starling account (with no fees, in euros). I have a Starling Euro account. The ATM I used was right outside Banque Populaire Mediterranee Bank. You have the option to accept or not to accept the dynamic conversion.
