The
City of Milan's Food Waste Hubs is an innovative initiative aimed at
reducing food waste and supporting those in need. Launched in 2019, the
program aims to halve food waste by 2030. Here's how it works:
- Food Recovery: The hubs recover surplus food from supermarkets, company canteens, and other sources. This food is still edible but would otherwise be discarded.
Distribution: The recovered food is then distributed to NGOs and charities, which provide it to the neediest citizens in the community.
Collaboration:
The initiative involves a wide range of partners, including public
agencies, food banks, charities, NGOs, universities, and private
businesses.
Impact: Each hub recovers about 130 tonnes of food per year, equivalent to approximately 260,000 meals.
The
City of Milan has created a blueprint that can be scaled globally,
demonstrating how cities can play a crucial role in reducing food waste
and supporting vulnerable populations.
You can learn more about the initiative on the Earthshot Prize website.
